About the Placement

Interns step directly into hospital-based nutrition therapy, outpatient dietetic services, and multidisciplinary care teams. You'll work alongside registered dietitians and nutritionists, observing and supporting evidence-based dietary care for patients across a wide range of medical specialties.

Placements run Monday to Friday, with flexible durations from 2 to 12 weeks depending on your academic schedule.

Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) is Ghana's largest teaching hospital and a leading referral center for the wider West African region. Its Nutrition and Dietetics Department is central to patient care, disease management, and preventive health across the hospital — and regularly trains BSc, MSc, and postgraduate dietetics students, alongside international interns.

What You'll Learn

• Clinical nutrition assessment and dietary planning
• Therapeutic diet formulation and monitoring
• Patient nutrition counseling, both inpatient and outpatient

This is a supervised learning experience built around observation and assisted participation, in line with hospital protocol and professional ethical standards.

Clinical & Specialized Nutrition Exposure

Depending on hospital scheduling and patient flow, interns rotate through services including:

• Weight management and malnutrition care
• Renal and dialysis nutrition
• Stroke and cardiovascular nutrition
• Gastroenterology and liver nutrition
• Oncology nutrition support
• Pediatric and child health nutrition
• Surgical pre- and post-operative nutrition
• Enteral feeding and dysphagia management

Community & Public Health Nutrition

Beyond the wards, interns take part in nutrition outreach and education work, including:

• Media-based nutrition education (radio, TV, print)
• Preventive nutrition counseling
• Public health nutrition awareness campaigns

Supervision & Mentorship

Every intern is mentored by Juliana Yeboah, Registered Dietitian and Head of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department, along with her professional team. Under their guidance, you'll gain direct exposure to clinical nutrition practice, patient dietary assessments, therapeutic diet planning, and hospital-wide nutrition services.

You'll sit in on nutritional consultations, learn how therapeutic diets are planned, join nutrition education activities, and see firsthand how dietitians shape both patient care and public health outcomes.

Pro-Passion Projects supports the placement from start to finish — orientation, regular check-ins, structured feedback, and ongoing mentorship — so you leave with both clinical exposure and cross-cultural healthcare experience.

Interns work under supervision throughout and do not practice independently, in keeping with institutional and professional standards.
